What is a root canal?

The root canal is the space inside your tooth that's filled with soft tissues, called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves, which is why it feels so painful if it gets damaged or infected. This can happen if the outer tooth is damaged by decay, trauma or severe gum disease, letting bacteria into the soft centre. If your tooth is infected, our dentists will recommend a root canal treatment  to save it. This is one of the most common dental procedures and involves removing the infected pulp to take away the pain and prevent an abscess from forming. After removing the infection, we'll fill in the root canal and cover the treated tooth with a natural-looking crown to restore your smile.

Root canal procedure

The tooth is opened using a dental drill and the damaged or infected pulp is removed. We'll then disinfect the root canal to make sure all bacteria has been removed.
